Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) welcomed 1,116 first-year undergraduate students for the 2023-24 academic session during an orientation program on Saturday, January 4, at the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium. Classes will commence on Monday, January 6.
The university administration greeted the new students with a guidebook and tuberose flowers. However, some students voiced disappointment over the lack of lunch arrangements at the event.
The program was presided over by Student Affairs Advisor Prof. Dr. Md. Shahidul Haque and moderated by Associate Student Affairs Advisor Prof. Dr. Md. Mohammad Saef Ullah. Former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and ex-Ambassador Prof. Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury attended as the chief guest, while BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan served as the event’s patron.
Special guests included Deans’ Council Convener Prof. Dr. Md. Zainal Abedin, Provosts’ Council Convener Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, Acting Registrar Dr. Md. Helal Uddin, and Proctor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, along with faculty members, students, and their guardians, totaling over 2,000 attendees.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to excel academically and contribute globally. “Each year, 50 to 60 of our students secure positions at leading international institutions. I urge you to develop expertise in areas like food security and technology to serve both Bangladesh and the world,” he said. He also emphasized maintaining the campus’ ragging-free environment and focusing on academics.
Chief guest Prof. Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury stressed the importance of quality higher education. “The standard of higher education in Bangladesh has declined over the years, yet its role in nation-building is critical. As students, you have immense potential and responsibility to build an equitable and prosperous society,” he stated.
He urged students to rise to the challenges of modern times and work toward creating a just and inclusive future.
