Locals attacks IU students, four injured

At least 9 students from the Islamic University (IU) were attacked by locals at midnight yesterday near the Tribeni Electric Substation, close to the university campus. Among the victims, four were injured. The victims, students of Physical Education and Sports Science department of the university under 2022-23 academic session.

According to the victims, the attack was initiated by three men on a motorcycle who questioned why they were outside the campus late at night. Despite the students identifying themselves, the attackers became aggressive and assaulted them with arms and metal tools. The students managed to escape and sought refuge in a nearby house. However, one of them, named Sumon, was attacked even inside the house. They then informed their seniors from their hiding spot.

In the aftermath, the students reported losing their mobile phones and a motorcycle. Upon being rescued by fellow students and leaders, most of their belongings were recovered, except for one mobile phone.

Local residents claim the students were seen gossiping and singing at midnight. The area, notorious for criminal activity, is often considered a dangerous zone, with multiple robberies and murders reported in the past.

SM Sweet, Co-ordinator of IU Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, As soon as we were informed about the incident, we rushed to the scene with an ambulance and rescued them. We fully support the students if they wish to take legal action.

Regarding the incident, Assistant Proctor Professor Dr Fakhrul Islam said, we informed about the attack last night and proctor is handling it directly. Students didnot submit any complain yet. After submitting complain the administration will fully cooperate.
