Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan will sit with the principals of the seven affiliated colleges today to discuss issues relating to students' interests.

In a press release issued today (27 January), the VC expressed grief over the clash between students of seven colleges affiliated with DU and the latter and urged the students to keep patience and maintain peace and harmony.

"The country is going through a crisis. In such a situation, all of us need to be united. We need to be vigilant to thwart third parties from taking advantages," the VC said.

Stating that a meeting will be held between the VC and principals of the seven affiliated colleges today, the VC said various topics regarding the interests of the students will be discussed.

The VC also expressed optimism that the issues which fall under the purview of the university will be solved through discussions.

Counsel will be sought from the committee formed by the government regarding other issues regarding the matter, the release read.

Meanwhile, the DU authority suspended all exams at the university and the seven colleges affiliated to it for today.

The date and time for the postponed exams will be notified later, said a press release issued by DU's Public Relations Office.

Earlier last night (26 January), Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB), along with police assistance, were deployed as students of the seven government colleges and Dhaka University locked in sporadic clashes at the Nilkhet intersection.

Four platoons of the BGB were deployed to maintain order as students of both seven colleges and Dhaka University were positioned there at around midnight, BGB PRO Shariful Islam confirmed.

Police reportedly lobbed sound grenades to disperse the crowd.

After intervention from the security forces, the situation started to normalise as tensions died down between the two groups at around 1:30am.
