A rental bus carrying more than 40 students from Islamic University (IU) was involved in a serious accident on the Kushtia-Khulna Highway, leaving 20 students injured. The incident occurred around 10:30 am in the Bittipara area, midway between Kushtia and the campus.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the bus lost control while overtaking another vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a roadside ditch. The driver and bus helper reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.
After rescuing the injured students, some of the injured were taken to Kushtia Sadar General Hospital, while others received treatment at the university medical center and nearby clinics.
University Proctor Prof. Dr. Shahinuzzaman said, We rushed to the scene and transported the 12 injured students to the hospital.
Four of the students were admitted, and further medical tests are underway for those with more serious injuries. If necessary, we will arrange for specialized treatment outside the country, he added.
IU Co-ordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, SM Sweet, demanded for immediate action to remove unfit buses from the university’s transport pool to prevent further accidents.
