Indian classical singer, and music maestro, Ustad Rashid Khan has passed away. At the time of his demise, he was 55. He has been battling prostate cancer and breathed his last at a hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday (9 January). An announcement regarding his death was made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The late Ustad Rashid Khan came from a great musical lineage. His great-grandfather was the founder of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, the legendary Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan Sahab. He’s also the nephew of the acclaimed Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
Throughout his significant career, he made significant contributions to Indian classical music. He has also created enchantment through his musical flair, in Bollywood with soulful songs like 'Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajana' from the Kareena-Shahid blockbuster 'Jab We Met' and 'Allah Hi Reham' from the Shah Rukh Khan's movie 'My Name is Khan'.
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta wrote paying tribute to the maestro on X (formerly Twitter),” Heartbreaking loss. Perhaps the greatest Hindustani Classical vocalist of our generation is gone. Music Maestro Ustad Rashid Khan passes away at the age of 55.”
Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal's opposition leader, expressing condolences in a post on X (previously Twitter) wrote, "I am deeply saddened to learn that Padma Bhushan Ustad Rashid Khan has left for his heavenly abode."
