Nazrin Choudhury, a British American screenwriter, director, and actress with Bangladeshi roots, earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Short Film category for ‘Red, White, and Blue.’
Nazrin, along with Sara McFarlane, produced the film, which also features actress Brittany Snow. The storyline centres around Rachel, a single parent living paycheck to paycheck, whose already precarious situation is further complicated by an unexpected pregnancy. Faced with the challenge, Rachel must cross state lines in pursuit of an abortion, as described in the film's synopsis.
In addition to her Oscar-nominated work, Nazrin has contributed to British television serials like ‘Casualty,’ ‘Doctors,’ ‘EastEnders,’ and ‘Waterloo Road’. Her talents extend to storyline writing for ‘Coronation Street’, and her radio play, ‘Mixed Blood,’ earned her the Richard Imison Award in 2006. She was also recognised as one of the finalists in the 2014 Fox Writers Intensive.
On September 17, 2020, it was announced that she would be the writer for ‘American Radical’ for Universal, based on the memoir penned by Kevin Maurer and Tamer Elnoury.
The other contenders in the Best Short Film category included ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,’ ‘The After,’ ‘Invincible,’ and ‘Night of Fortune.’
The nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards were unveiled on Tuesday in Beverly Hills, with Christopher Nolan's ‘Oppenheimer’ leading with 13 major nominations. ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Barbie,’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ closely followed with strong showings.
