Renowned Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan was awarded a government grant of Tk 60 lakh for the production of a movie during the 2020-21 fiscal year. The film, titled 'Roid,' was initially slated to be helmed by the renowned director Mezbaur Rahman Sumon, known for the acclaimed film 'Hawa.' However, three years later, both the director and producer announced a significant change in plans—the movie would now proceed without the aid of government funding, adopting a new financial arrangement.
Meanwhile, Jaya has already returned the first installment of the government grant, following in the footsteps of director Amitab Reza Chowdhury, who also refunded the grant money within the same financial year.
Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Saiful Islam, confirmed the return of Jaya's funds, saying, “Jaya Ahsan has informed us of her decision not to proceed with the movie and has returned the initial installment of the grant."
In regards to the decision to return the grant money, director Mezbaur Rahman Sumon shared with the media, “Several factors, including finalising the cast and location, as well as my personal commitments, have caused delays in commencing movie production. The grant was received two years ago, and the deadline for film submission has since elapsed. We have faced criticism for our inability to deliver the movie on schedule, which neither Jaya nor I wish to endure. Therefore, we collectively decided to refund the grant, considering our need for additional time to complete the film.”
Sumon emphasised that despite the grant refund, the movie project remains active under a revised financial framework, saying, “Returning the grant money does not equate to discontinuing the film. We have completed the pre-production phase and are proceeding with production under our own production company, Facecard.”
Regarding Jaya's involvement in the production of 'Roid,' Sumon remarked, “We have yet to discuss this matter with Jaya. Once we do, I will be able to confirm whether she will serve as the film's producer. Our previous discussions focused solely on donations, with both parties acknowledging our shared urgency to commence production, despite reservations.”
Efforts to reach Jaya Ahsan for further comment were unsuccessful, as the popular actress is presently in India promoting one of her films.
