Legendary singer Ferdousi Rahman turns 83

Ferdousi Rahman, a living legend in Bangladesh's music scene, is celebrating her 83rd birthday. As long as the history of Bangladeshi music endures, her name will be remembered with utmost respect as a pride of the nation's musical landscape.

Ferdousi Rahman pioneered the music learning programme ‘Esho Gaan Shikhi’ on Bangladesh Television. Although she is currently unable to teach on the show due to health concerns, she still eagerly watches it whenever it airs.

Reflecting on her journey, Ferdousi Rahman said, “I have reached 83 years of age in the blink of an eye. These days, I rarely leave home unless absolutely necessary. I enjoy listening to the songs of artists like Shahnaz Rahmatullah, Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin, Kanak Chapa, Shakila Zafar, and Alamara Minu from the comfort of my home.”

Ferdousi Rahman emphasises the importance of proper musical training, saying, “Many current singers aren't practicing the grammar of music correctly. Music requires dedicated practice; there are no shortcuts.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Ferdousi Rahman has been a versatile artiste, excelling in folk songs, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, and as a playback singer. She has received numerous accolades, including the country's second highest civilian award, the Ekushey Padak, and a lifetime achievement award from the National Film Awards.

Born on June 28, 1941, in Cooch Behar, Ferdousi Rahman has had a remarkable journey in music since her first radio performance in 1948. She has lent her voice to approximately 260 films and recorded over 5,000 songs.

As she enters her 83rd year, Ferdousi Rahman remains a beloved figure in Bangladesh's music industry, revered for her contributions to the nation's cultural heritage.
