During the quota reform movement, noted Indian singer Kabir Suman had expressed solidarity with the students through a Facebook post. Subsequently, faced with a series of demands and non-cooperation movement from students, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position on August 5 and fled the country.
In this situation, popular artiste Kabir Suman has composed a protest song for the demonstrators against the autocrats of Bangladesh. He shared a video of himself singing the song acapella on his Facebook page.
In the video, Kabir Suman sings, ‘Kotodin Kadini, Kotodin Bhabini, Kotodin Jagini Ebhabe/ Oi to Bangladesh, Soiracharer Shesh, E Agun Kei-ba Nebhabe/ Abar Bachte Chai, Mrityur Mukhe Chhai, Bangla Bhashai Holo Pran/Mukir Ei Alo, Bangladesh Jwalalo, E Lorai Muktir Gaan’ (How many days I haven't cried, how many days I haven't thought, how many days I haven't stayed awake like this / That's Bangladesh, the end of autocracy, who can extinguish this fire / We want to live again, ashes in the face of death, Bengali language is our life / This light of freedom, Bangladesh has lit, this fight is a song of liberation).
For context, Kabir Suman rose to the peak of popularity in 1992 with the release of an album titled ‘Tomake Chai’ (I Want You). However, at one point he became actively involved in local politics. Later, this singer was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Trinamool Congress from the Jadavpur constituency.
