Renowned Rabindra Sangeet artist and Ekushey Padak awardee Papia Sarwar has passed away at the age of 72. She breathed her last at 8am today at a private hospital in Dhaka, confirmed her husband, Sarwar Alam to Prothom Alo. Her body has been kept in the BIRDEM mortuary, where it will remain until her funeral.
The funeral prayer is scheduled to be held after Jummah prayers tomorrow (13 December), following which she will be laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard.
Papia Sarwar had been battling cancer for several years. She received treatment at a hospital in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area last month before being admitted to another private hospital in Tejgaon for her final days, reports media.
A beloved figure in Bangladesh's cultural landscape, Papia Sarwar's contributions to Rabindra Sangeet were unparalleled.She received the Rabindra Award from Bangla Academy in 2013, was honoured with the Bangla Academy Fellowship in 2015, and was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2021.
She is survived by her husband and two children.
