Discrimination has no place in Hollywood: Smrity Fami

Smrity Fami

Smrity Fami, a renowned Bangladeshi model and actress from the nineties, continues to captivate audiences with her artistic prowess and timeless acting. Currently residing in London with her family, Fami has shifted her focus to various endeavours. In an exclusive interview with Nisha Mahmuda of The Daily Messenger, she provides insights into her recent engagements and her experiences working in Hollywood. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

The Daily Messenger (TDM): Can you tell us about your recent engagements?
Fami: Recently, I have been engrossed in my beauty and skincare brand, Fami UK. Initially, it started off within England and Europe, but we have expanded our business to numerous countries worldwide, including America and Australia. The responsibilities have grown, and I'm thrilled that it is now available in Bangladesh, my motherland. Additionally, I am involved in teaching and acting, which are passions I pursue.

TDM: Which projects have you worked on in Hollywood?

Fami: I had the opportunity to play a special role in the movie 'Polite Society,' which involved a challenging action sequence requiring stunt work. Another film of mine is currently being showcased at various international film festivals, and I am eagerly awaiting its release. Hollywood is a challenging industry, and working alongside exceptional talent and the most knowledgeable individuals has been truly rewarding. I feel accomplished when I see my work being recognised on an international scale.

I have also had the privilege of working on a Marvel movie, which I'm eagerly anticipating. My character in this film is unique and fascinating, and I hope the audience shares the same excitement as I do. Playing the role of a forensics officer was a new experience for me, and being part of such a major production was incredible. I am also involved in other upcoming projects, which I look forward to working on.

TDM: Could you share your shooting experience with us?

Fami: The first day of filming was incredibly exciting. As I was involved in a fight sequence, I was given a vanity van, where I was accompanied by the costume designer and makeup artiste. They were extremely welcoming and friendly, treating me with great respect and kindness. We had multiple rehearsals and practice sessions for the action sequence prior to the filming day. Working with talented actors, actresses, and directors like Emma Thompson, Lily James, and Shekhar Kapur was a remarkable achievement for me, and sharing screen space with them was an honour.

TDM: As a Bengali artiste, do you face any challenges or discrimination in Hollywood?

Fami: Hollywood is an industry that values sensitivity and inclusivity. Discrimination has no place here. Every artiste, regardless of their background, is given equal importance and respect. The growing significance of multicultural roles in this era of diversity is evident, and I am content with the inclusive environment Hollywood offers.

TDM: Considering the stark differences between the British and domestic film industries, do you have any advice for the domestic industry?

Fami: Bangladesh is home to many talented individuals and creative minds. To further flourish, they should invest time in studying and researching the art of filmmaking. Embracing modern technology will enhance their work, as everything else is already thriving in the industry.
