The government-funded movie 'Briddhashram' was released in 18 theatres across the country. Singer SD Rubel made his debut as a filmmaker in this production, where he not only directed but also acted alongside actress Bobby. In an exclusive interview with Nisha Mahmuda of The Daily Messenger, Rubel shared insights into his latest movie. Here are excerpts from the interview:

The Daily Messenger: You took a long break from acting on the big screen after 'Ebhabei Bhalobasa Hoy.' Why this long hiatus?
SD Rubel: Although I've been involved in many music videos and commercials, I refrained from working on the big screen because the scripts I received didn't resonate with me. I didn't want to participate in projects that didn't convey a meaningful message to society. Entertainment, for me, is not just about dancing and singing; it should also include a social message. 'Briddhashram' does precisely that by portraying family bonds and conveying important social messages while providing entertainment. This, to me, is genuine entertainment, and I believe my contribution should be accompanied by a message.

Messenger: 'Briddhashram' is your first movie as a director. What inspired you to venture into filmmaking?
Rubel: Most people know me as a singer, but there is more to my identity that I haven't highlighted much. I have been involved in acting on stage since ninth grade and was part of the Ananya Group Theatre in Chandpur for a long time. I have also written scripts for dramas, commercials, and authored three novels. Additionally, I have been engaged in direction and have made numerous commercials, docudramas, and dramas. I've gained substantial knowledge about direction through my experiences. My foray into direction aimed to combat social degradation.

Messenger: Your movie was censored quite some time ago. Why did it take so long to be released?
Rubel: We began shooting 'Briddhashram' between 2017 and 2019. The movie received its censor certificate on December 19, 2020. However, shortly thereafter, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country, leading to the closure of cinemas for two and a half years. As cinemas gradually reopened, a backlog of movies needed to be released, making it challenging to secure a release date. Additionally, there was an influx of foreign language movies. The hall owners decided to release our movie at a later date due to these factors.

Messenger: How has the audience responded to ‘Briddhashram’?
Rubel: Many people went to the theatres, purchased tickets, and watched 'Briddhashram,' and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. If you check the reviews on my Facebook page, you will see that people have been emotionally moved, and they are expressing a desire for more movies like 'Briddhashram.' While I may not know the individuals behind these reviews personally, they are providing positive feedback because they genuinely enjoyed the movie. It's a matter of great pride for me.

Messenger: What are your plans for future projects?
Rubel: I am currently preparing for three movies. The preparations for a movie titled 'Neel Akashe Pakhi Ure' are nearly complete, and shooting may commence next November, with me at the helm. Discussions are ongoing for the other two projects, with different directors under consideration. I will provide more details once everything is finalised.
