Insulin can be taken without inserting a needle into the body. The amount of glucose in the blood will be known after five minutes. Insulin will automatically enter the body when needed. It will not be necessary to measure the sugar level separately by glucometer.

Millions of diabetics will be spared the pain of taking insulin through a needle. ACI Healthcare Equipment recently tie up with Medtronic International as an exclusive distributor of the insulin pump device to take insulin in a comfortable and easy way for diabetics. It is called an 'insulin pump'.

Dr. Rumana Dowla, Head of the medical services department (MSD) of ACI Pharma and ACI Healthcare Equipment, told Daily Messenger on Tuesday, “The pump system can save you from hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels), as automatically the right amount of insulin will enter the body and not enter when it is not needed.  A CGM system is used to monitor the condition of the patient blood sugar level. The system is like a closed-circuit camera, meaning every moment is captured. Glucose can be measured at every moment. It detects blood sugar fluctuations and changes through graphs.''

She further said, “The small mobile phone-shaped insulin pump can be worn on the waist through a belt. It can also be kept in the pocket of clothes. By applying it to the body, daily activities, sports, exercise, and bathing can all be done effortlessly. This device, like the pancreas, will measure the blood glucose fluctuations, tell how much insulin is needed, and automatically inject that amount of insulin into the body. A very fine plastic tube from the insulin pump goes under the skin through an infusion set placed in the abdomen or at a designated place on the body to receive insulin, through which insulin enters the body as needed.'

Dr. Rumana Dowla also said, "Especially, we are paying more attention to women, pregnant women, and children. We are also ready to work with hospital authorities if they come forward to start 'insulin pump' clinics in big cities. We want to deliver the package to the customer through EMI mode.''

Associate Prof. Dr. Ahsanul Haq Amin, Senior Consultant, Endocrinology & Metabolism, Evercare Hospital, Dhaka, told TDM, “The integration of insulin pumps has brought revolution in diabetes management. Pumps can ensure a brighter and healthier future for those living with this chronic condition. Using an insulin pump instead of multiple daily injections offers greater convenience and potentially improved blood sugar management. It ensures freedom in daily life, reduces fluctuation, and offers more protection from complications.’’

Quamsia Sultana, Marketing Manager of Healthcare Equipment, said, "It is not available in pharmacies. Healthcare equipment sales executives deliver and setup the device for any customer with diabetes as per the doctor's advice. They will also train the pump users, caregivers. Apart from this, Evercare hospital team will train once a week at Evercare Hospital's insulin pump clinic with the Support of ACI and Medtronic team. The full package of the Mini med 780G insulin pump approximate cost about 7 lakh 20 thousand taka.

Md. Fazlay Omar from Medtronic shared, 'The device has a 4-year warranty. It is fully digitalized and automated. By installing the app, the blood glucose level will be known every 5 minutes on the mobile phone. The reservoir (insulin cartridge) can be changed as needed. The infusion set (which must be attached to the body) should be changed after 3–4 days. Each package contains 10 pieces of the infusion set. There will be 5 pieces of sensor or monitor (which must be attached to a convenient place on the hand or body). However, if anyone wants to buy one can take a piece of sensor and monitor in the package and later can increase it. The device is battery-powered. A battery will be included in the package. Besides, a manual Mini med 700g insulin pump also available and cost 3 lakhs for the full package.'

Mst. Quamsia also share "In Bangladesh, about three hundred patients are now using insulin pumps so far. And their diabetes control is fantastic as per their comments.

With the interest of Dr. Ahsanul Haq Amin, associate professor of Evercare Hospital, the country's first insulin pump clinic has been set up in Evercare.
