Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen on Wednesday (26 June) laid emphasis on the detection of breast cancer at an early stage to save lives as well as treatment costs.

"We can save lives if breast cancer is diagnosed at an early stage . . . it is very crucial to create awareness among the womenfolk on the importance of early treatment of breast cancer for recovering from the killer disease," he told a function at Shamsunesa Arju Moni Ma and Shishu Kalyan Kendra in city's Hajaribag area.

The 10-bed Shamsunesa Arju Moni Ma and Shishu Kalyan Kendra have been upgraded to a 50-bed healthcare facility, an official release said.

Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Rokeya Sultana and Lawmaker Ferdous Ahmed, among others, addressed the function with Medical Education Secretary Md Azizur Rahman in the chair.

“There is a common tendency among women for ignoring breast cancer disease,” the health minister said. He directed the female physicians to check for symptoms related to breast cancer with the highest sincerity.

He suggested female doctors to send the patients to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery if they detect any lumps in breast. Modern and updated version of technological facilities is available at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Samanta said.

"The institute (Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery) will provide treatment free of cost to the patients with any possible symptom related to breast cancer," he added.
