The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will inspect counterterrorism measures at the world's largest nuclear power plant — Kashiwazaki-Kariwa located in Japan — at the request of its operator, TEPCO, the NHK news agency reported on Tuesday (5 March) .

In 2021, Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority banned the transfer of nuclear materials to the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture after a series of violations related to the facility's counterterrorism measures. The ban was lifted in late December 2023.

TEPCO's request is mostly driven by the need to restore public trust following an almost three-year closure of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPP, the news agency reported.

The IAEA will inspect the facility from March 25 to April 2, the report said. TEPCO intends to use the watchdog's future recommendations when taking further measures.

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear generating station in the world by net electrical power rating. It has a total output capacity of 8,212 megawatts.
