All countries in the world should follow the rules enshrined in the UN Charter and not create their own with a view to satisfying their desires, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday (7 March).
"China has always believed that there is only one system in the world, and that is the system centered on the United Nations ... No country should bend its own line and create its own rules," the minister told a press conference on the sidelines of the second session of China's 14th National People's Congress.
There is also only one set of rules for international relations and it is based on the purposes and principles set in the UN Charter, he said.
"The series of crises and challenges in the past years, once again warn us that the UN role can only be strengthened, not weakened, the place of the UN must be protected, and it cannot be replaced," Wang added.
At the same time, the UN should keep up with the times and continuously reform and improve to adapt to the new reality of international political and economic development. In particular, the representation and voice of the emerging economies should be reinforced, the minister concluded.
Currently, the UN Security Council consists of five permanent members — the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom, and 10 rotating members.
