North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has visited the main national military base for training exercises in the western part of his country amid ongoing US-South Korean joint drills on Thursday (7 March).

Kim inspected facilities and various training sites at the base on Wednesday. He also went up to an observation post, where he heard a report on the troops' training plan for 24 hours and took over the leadership of the drills.

During his visit, Kim was accompanied by Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea's Central Committee Pak Jong Chon. The leader was welcomed by the armed forces command staff, including Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam and Chief of the General Staff Ri Yong Gil.

Kim expressed "great satisfaction" with the armed forces' exercises, but at the same time, he stressed the need for even more active training and put forward program objectives for future practical drills.

The North Korean leader also urged the country's armed forces to further work on improving their combat skills in line with the latest changes in warfare and the current geopolitical situation to deter "the constant threat of enemies with overwhelming force" and keep preventing their alleged attempts to "ignite a war".
