Salvador could help Haiti with its security problems if a foreign mission was authorized by the UN Security Council (UNSC) and Haitian government, Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele said on Sunday (10 March).

On Friday, Haitian criminal gangs attacked several governmental buildings in the country's capital of Port-au-Prince, including the Presidential Palace, the Interior Ministry and a police office.

"We can fix it [security crisis]. But we’ll need a UNSC resolution, the consent of the host country, and all the mission expenses to be covered," said Bukele.

Earlier in the week, Marine Corps Times reported that the United States was considering sending naval forces to Haiti over security deterioration.

On February 29, gangs began shooting in the center of Port-au-Prince and in the area of the city's international airport, in the absence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was on a visit to Kenya trying to agree on the deployment of foreign armed forces in his country to fight criminal groups. Gangs declared their aim was to prevent Henri from returning to Haiti. An armed gang stormed Haiti's largest prison and freed an as of yet unconfirmed number of inmates. The Haitian government declared state of emergency in the capital region.

Haiti has long been mired in a social and political crisis that escalated after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise on July 7, 2021. The country has faced an unprecedented increase in the activities of criminal groups, while the humanitarian situation has been further deteriorating due to a multitude of natural disasters.
