Former US President Donald Trump attempted to sell his Truth Social media platform to tech billionaire Elon Musk, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday (12 March).
The discussions between Trump and Musk would have happened during Summer 2023, the report said, adding that the talks occurred at a time when Truth Social was in a long-delayed merger process.
Trump Media, the owner of the Truth Social platform, was then facing a pessimistic financial outlook, the report said. The former president had said during his pre-2024 presidential candidacy financial disclosure that his 90% stake in the company was worth up to $25 million and his personal benefits were barely under $200.
However, the talks did not lead to any sort of deal, the report said, and while Trump continues to seek to both to sustain and increase his social media platform's financial value, he also insists to his advisers and close circle that Musk should be interesting in buying Truth Social.
The report further noted that when asked about the call, Musk said he had never been to Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s estate in Florida. Trump’s campaign did not address inquiries about the matter, it added.
