Chicago authorities plan to begin the gradual eviction of undocumented migrants from overcrowded shelters starting this Saturday (16 March).
The corresponding decision was previously made by the mayor of the city, Brandon Johnson, but its implementation has been repeatedly delayed since November 2023 due to cold weather, however, that last Friday Johnson decided that the first 35 undocumented migrants would be evicted from city shelters on Saturday.
The report added that another 5,600 migrants would be evicted in the coming weeks. Evicted migrants will be housed in a specially equipped area on the outskirts of the city, which will serve as a temporary shelter, the report said. They will be able to reapply for a bed at the city shelter.
As of now, about 11,200 migrants are housed in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported. The peak of the influx of undocumented migrants in the city occurred in December last year - then their number reached 14,900 people.
