The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will cease cooperation with approximately 500 specialists with ties to Russia on November 30, CERN spokesman Arnaud Marsollier told.
"At the moment we have less than 500 specialists who are still associated with any Russian organization, most of whom do not live in this region (Switzerland). The suspension of the cooperation agreement will come into force on November 30 this year," Marsollier said.
Marsollier recalled that CERN no longer receives any funding from Russia.
"And we are preparing for other groups to take over tasks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the future," he added.
The termination of CERN's cooperation with Russian scientists will negatively impact scientific research of both sides, Russia's Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP), whose researchers have worked at CERN.
"The CERN administration has taken a political decision to suspend cooperation with scientific organizations from Russia. This decision will have a negative impact on the scientific research of both CERN and scientific institutes in Russia," the Siberia-based institute said, adding that "further cooperation is not under discussion."
CERN is the largest high-energy physics laboratory in the world. It is known for experiments involving the LHC, which was created with the participation of physicists from different countries. The collider helped scientists to discover the existence of the Higgs boson elementary particle responsible for the existence of other particles' mass.
