Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party is planning to initiate amendments to the country's constitution that would ban LGBT "propaganda" (the LGBT movement is banned in Russia as extremist), same-sex marriage and gender reassignment, the party's executive secretary, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said on Monday (25 March).
"On the one hand, our duty is to protect all constitutional rights and freedoms of any person, no matter what non-traditional or other lifestyle they may stick to. On the other hand, we must protect family values and our future generations from the expected irreparable consequences of pseudoliberal propaganda … We have decided to initiate constitutional amendments that will include clear guarantees of family values and the protection of minors, after which we will also initiate more specific changes in the laws in the near future," Mdinaradze told reporters.
LGBT rallies might be banned if they are of propaganda nature, the Georgian official said, adding that the new law would prohibit all gatherings and campaigns aimed at promoting same-sex intercourse, incest, adoption or custody of a minor by a same-sex couple or a non-heterosexual person and medical intervention related to gender reassignment.
The party will need 100 votes of Georgian lawmakers to adopt the constitutional amendments, while its parliamentary majority stands at 84 seats.
