Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is nervous because "an election" or "not an election" are coming, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told, after Zelenskyy decoupled peace talks with Russia from the restoration of Ukraine's 1991 borders.

Earlier this week, Zelenskyy told the CBS News broadcaster that negotiations with Russia could begin without restoring Ukraine's borders to what they were at the time of the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, making a change in his rhetoric. He said that Russia would be "ready" for dialogue if Ukraine managed to restore its pre-conflict borders.

"He's nervous. He's got an election coming up. Or not an election?" Zakharova said.

The presidential election was supposed to take place in Ukraine in the spring of 2024 in accordance with the country's legislation. However, the Ukrainian constitution prohibits holding elections under martial law, which has been in effect in the country since the beginning of Russia's military operation. In February, the Ukrainian parliament approved the extension of martial law in the country for another 90 days.
