Brazil's Supreme Court has turned down a request by the defense team of former President Jair Bolsonaro that his passport, which was confiscated last month as part of a probe into an alleged coup plot, be returned to him so that he could travel to Israel, Brazilian media reported.
Bolsonaro's passport was seized in February during a police raid related to an investigation into whether he and his inner circle plotted a coup so that he could remain in power after losing the 2022 election, the G1 news portal reported on Friday (29 March).
Earlier this month, Bolsonaro's legal team turned to Brazil's top court to authorize his visit to Israel from May 12-18 at the invitation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes denied the request on Thursday, saying that the restriction was "necessary and appropriate" amid the ongoing coup probe, the report said.
