Lebanon's caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, has condemned the drone attack, attributed to Israel but denied by the latter, in which several United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observers were injured on the Lebanese side of the mutual border, his office said on Saturday (30 March).
Earlier in the day, Lebanese media reported that an Israeli drone hit a UNIFIL vehicle in the southern village of Wadi Katmoun near the border town of Rmeish. Several UN military observers were reportedly injured in the incident. A UNIFIL spokesperson later confirmed the strike, saying that three military observers and their Lebanese interpreter had been injured during foot patrol on the border with Israel.
"Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, made a phone call to the UNIFIL Commander, Maj. Gen. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz, expressing his solidarity with the international forces after the attack on a UNIFIL vehicle that resulted in injuries. The caretaker prime minister condemned this grave incident," Mikati's office was quoted as saying by the Lebanese state-run National News Agency.
The Israel Defense Forces, for its part, has denied having struck UNIFIL's vehicle in Lebanon.
Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah has been exchanging airstrikes with Israel regularly since October 2023, as the situation in the region deteriorated dramatically after Israel announced a military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian movement launched a surprise attack and abducted hundreds.
