The European Commission on Tuesday (2 April) denied that Turkey’s Southwind Airlines was on the list of entities sanctioned by the European Union, after Finland accused it of having links to Russia.
"EU sanctions are adopted unanimously by Member States and published in the Official Journal of the EU. To date, the EU has not adopted any such sanctions concerning the company in question," a Commission spokesperson said.
The EU Commission supports actions taken by EU member states if they are aimed at "ensuring uniform implementation and effective enforcement of EU sanctions," the spokesperson added.
European media reported last week that Southwind had been banned from flying to or over EU member states after it applied for a permit to operate flights between Finland and Turkey. Finnish transport authority Traficom said it had barred Southwind from Finnish airspace over suspected ties to Russia. Southwind said it would sue the EU to have the ban revoked.
