Moscow and Beijing have noted the similarity of their respective positions on the Middle East settlement and the situation around the Korean Peninsula, stressing that any crises must be overcome in accordance with international law, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday (4 April).

"A number of local and regional issues on the international agenda have been reviewed, including the Middle East settlement and the situation around the Korean Peninsula. The parties have noted the similarity of their approaches to the said issues and reaffirmed their common principled position regarding the overcoming of crisis situations on the solid basis of international law," the ministry said in a statement following the consultations between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Miao Deyu in Beijing.

The two officials also discussed the issues of reforming the United Nations, including in the context of preparations for the Summit of the Future, which is set to take place in New York from September 22-23.

"It was stated that the transformations should serve to strengthen the authority and effectiveness of the UN while maintaining its intergovernmental nature and central coordinating role in global affairs, and be based on the broadest possible consent of the member states," the ministry added.

In September 2023, top and senior diplomats of the G4 countries, namely Brazil, Germany, India and Japan met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and called for a "comprehensive" reform of the UN Security Council and expansion of its membership.

Russia has repeatedly expressed its support for reforms of the UN Security Council, particularly the expansion of its membership through eliminating the under-representation of the global majority countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
