The United States and Finland have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation on countering "foreign state information manipulation," the US Department of State said on Thursday (4 April).
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen signed the memorandum on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels.
"Foreign state information manipulation, which includes disinformation and propaganda, is a transnational security threat that can create or exploit divisions within and among countries, imperil election integrity, and undermine public trust in government," the State Department said in a statement.
Under the memorandum, the two countries will expand information sharing about "foreign disinformation," share practices for fighting it, and align policies.
Signed on the first anniversary of Finland’s accession to NATO, the memorandum represents "the expanding coalition of like-minded countries coming together to protect an open, fact-based, and resilient global information environment," the statement said.
