US imports of Russian fertilizers amounted to $158.5 million in February, which is the highest volume since June 2023, when the purchases totaled $158.7 million, the US statistics bureau showed on Saturday (6 April).
From January to February 2024, the United States more than doubled its purchases of fertilizers from Russia, the data also showed. Nitrogen and potash fertilizers make up the bulk of Washington's imports from Russia, with their purchases totaling $84 million and $74 million, respectively, in February.
The United States also purchased $550,000 worth of Russia's mineral fertilizers in February. Washington is also interested in importing Russian fertilizers of animal or plant origin and phosphate fertilizers, according to the statistics.
In 2023, Russia shipped nearly $1.4 billion worth of fertilizers to the US, ranking second with a 15% share of the country's total fertilizer imports. Canada ranked first with a 48% share or supplies worth $4.4 billion.
