Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng has expressed "grave concern" over US trade and economic restrictions during his talks with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in China's city of Guangzhou, the Chinese government said on Saturday (6 April).

Yellen arrived in China on Thursday on a five-day visit. Yellen and He held several rounds of talks in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou from April 5-6.

"The two sides agreed to discuss issues such as balanced growth of the United States, China and the global economy, financial stability, sustainable finance, and cooperation in countering money laundering under the China-U.S. economic and financial working group. The Chinese side expressed grave concern over U.S. economic and trade measures restricting China," the Chinese government said in a statement.

As a result of the talks, the parties agreed to keep maintaining communication, the statement read.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation. Xi told Biden that the United States was continuously putting pressure on China's scientific, technological, trade and economic areas, with more and more Chinese companies finding themselves on sanctions lists. If the United States wants to carry out mutually beneficial cooperation, China's doors will remain open, but if Washington keeps suppressing the development of China's high technologies, Beijing will take retaliatory measures, Xi said.
