A fire followed by a massive explosion has occurred at the Akal Bravo maritime oil platform, part of the Cantarell production complex in Mexico's Bay of Campeche, causing harm to local workers, Mexican state-owned petroleum company Pemex said on Sunday (7 April).
"At 4:48 p.m. (22:48 GMT on Saturday), a fire broke out on one of the platforms of the Akal-B Process Center (Akal-B1), in the area where the pipes supplying fuel gas for turbomachinery are located. The Emergency Response Plan (PRE) was immediately activated at the facility," the company said in a statement.
Two Pemex workers and seven employees of partner companies Diavaz and Cotemar suffered non-serious injuries as a result of the fire and explosion, the company said, adding that information was being updated. Meanwhile, a number of media outlets reported that 11 people, including eight Pemex employees, had allegedly died in the incident.
