Several French mercenaries have been injured as Russia struck on Monday a location of the Ukrainian armed forces in the city of Sloviansk, also known as Slavyansk, in the Kiev-controlled part of the Donetsk People's Republic, said Mykolaiv underground coordinator Sergey Lebedev.
"Shells did not hit the [gathering point] that was set up in a music school building, but the area around it, which is why there are so many wounded. The French are most likely to have been taken to [the city of] Pavlohrad so that locals would not see them," Lebedev said.
Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The Russian armed forces started striking critical Ukrainian infrastructure on October 10, 2022, two days after a bombing attack against the Crimean bridge, which Russian authorities believe was carried out by Ukrainian security services. The strikes target energy, defense, military administration and communications facilities across the country. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian troops were not targeting residential housing and social infrastructure while fighting the Ukrainian armed forces.
