NATO countries will violate the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) by deploying nuclear weapons in Poland, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) said on Tuesday (23 April).
Earlier this week, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview that Poland was ready to host nuclear weapons of the United States, later adding that no decisions have been made yet on the matter.
"The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the only international treaty that explicitly bans countries from hosting the nuclear weapons of another state. NATO members argue nuclear sharing is consistent with their responsibilities under the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty, but it clearly violates the spirit, if not the letter of that treaty," ICAN said in a statement.
