The European Union adopted on Monday (13 May) a regulation that mandates deeper carbon emission cuts for heavy-duty vehicles as the bloc seeks to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The revised rules expand emission targets from heavy trucks over 16 tonnes to those over 7.5 tonnes, as well as to urban buses, coaches and trailers, under the premise that heavy vehicles account for over 25% of emissions produced by road transport in the EU.
The provision retains the 2030 emissions cut target for heavy trucks of 15% and sets the 2035 goal at 45%. From 2035 onward, all heavy and medium trucks as well as coaches and corresponding vocational vehicles are to slash emissions by 65%, reaching the 90% CO2 reduction target by 2040.
A 100% emission cut target will be introduced for new urban buses by 2035, with an intermediate target of 90% set for 2030. Inter-urban buses will be exempt, as they will be regarded as coaches for the purposes of measuring emissions reduction.
The regulation will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The European Commission will review progress in its implementation in 2027.
