US President Joe Biden’s administration fears that Iran could blame the United States or Israel for the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Washington expects the regional status quo to remain, but at the same time fears that accusations from Iran could lead to an escalation of tensions with Israel.
US officials on Sunday (19 May) were anxiously following news about the missing helicopter and wondering how the accident might change dynamics in the Middle East.
"For a little while, it was not a crazy question to ask ‘Is this how World War III begins?" one of the officials was quoted as saying.
On Monday, Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri confirmed media reports that Raisi and his delegation, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, died on Sunday in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran on their way back from a visit to Azerbaijan.
