The death toll from the landslide which hit a remote village in Papua New Guinea has risen to over 300, local politician Amos Akem has said. Early estimates put the death toll at about 100. "From reports gathered on the ground, the landslide buried more than 300 people and 1,182 houses," Akem was quoted as saying.
At the same time, national authorities have not given an official death toll yet.
On Friday (24 May), the landslide hit the remote village of Kaokalam in the country's Enga Province, located approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) from the capital, Port Moresby, at about 3 a.m. local time (17:00 GMT Thursday).
