Participants in the eighth Brussels Conference on "Supporting the future of Syria and the region" pledged to allocate 7.5 billion euros ($8.1 billion) in the form of grants and soft loans to the needs of Syrian refugees, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said.
"In support, we have raised a total of 7.5 billion euros (5 billion euros in grants and 2.5 billion euros in loans)," Lenarcic said on X on Monday (27 May).
He added that three-quarters of these funds were allocated by the European Union and its member states.
The armed conflict in Syria has been ongoing since 2011, with various insurgent groups, including terrorist organizations, fighting the Syrian Army to topple the government of President Bashar Assad, as well as fighting each other. An estimated 16.7 million people in Syria are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, including 5 million refugees who were forced to flee Syria to neighbouring states, as well as 7.2 million internally displaced people, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
