The threat of mass starvation in the Gaza Strip remains due to the continuation of armed hostilities, which are taking a heavy toll on the civilian population, and a massive food security crisis is possible, said Oleg Kobyakov, the director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Liaison Office in Russia.
"Absolutely there is still a threat of mass starvation. This prognosis persists due to the continuation of armed hostilities, which have a negative impact on the civilian population. Now almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip is in the third or fourth phase of food insecurity and we can talk about a massive crisis," Kobyakov said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Gaza is currently one of the hottest hunger hotspots that UN humanitarian agencies are struggling to eliminate, Kobyakov added.
