Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander de Croo will resign after his party suffered a heavy defeat in federal and regional polls. He will stay on in a caretaker capacity during what is expected to be protected coalition talks. "For us, it's a particularly difficult evening, we have lost. Starting tomorrow, I will be a resigning Prime Minister," De Croo told supporters, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye.
His Flemish liberal party, Open VLD, is projected to lose almost half its seats in the Chamber of Representatives. Sunday's (9 June) vote in the linguistically divided country, which is split between Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and French-speaking Wallonia in the south, was held on the same day as the European Parliament elections.
The prime minister congratulated the winners of the elections. His party received 5.9% of the votes in the federal elections and 8.1% in the regional elections.
