Palestinian movement Hamas' proposal for a truce in the Gaza Strip, which it provided to mediators on Tuesday (11 June), differs little from what it had previously agreed to on May 6, citing a Hamas quote.

On May 6, the movement said it had accepted the ceasefire proposal put forward by mediators Qatar and Egypt.

The source said that Hamas underscored its unwavering support for a permanent ceasefire and the full evacuation of Israeli forces from Gaza in the new proposal. It also included the requirement for Israel to withdraw its armed forces from the Rafah crossing and the Philadelphia axis.

According to Hamas' request, Israel should disclose the status of Palestinians detained by Israeli forces since the October attack. The proposal also demanded a legal assurance that individuals who were freed would not be arrested again or convicted for earlier offenses.

The main issue was Israel vetoing the release of convicts serving life sentences as part of the ceasefire agreement.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack against Israel and breached the border, attacking both civilian neighborhoods and military bases. Nearly 1,200 people in Israel were killed and some 240 others abducted during the attack. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and started a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Over 37,100 people have been killed so far by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local authorities. A total of 120 hostages are still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza, and about a third of them are believed to be dead.
