The Rosoboronexport arms exporter, a part of Russian state-owned defense corporation Rostec, has commenced manufacturing of Mango armor-piercing tank rounds in India, the corporation said in a statement on Thursday (4 July).

"Another stage in Russian-Indian cooperation within the frameworks of the Make in India and Self-Reliant India is completed. On the basis of the Indian defense complex, Rosoboronexport has prepared for launch key production facilities for the production of Mango tank rounds. This allows the Indian side to start assimilating the technology received and to organize manufacturing," the exporter's Director General Alexander Mikheev was quoted as saying by Rostec.

Rosoboronexport's work in India is a "striking example of comprehensive industrial partnership," within whose framework joint projects for all types of arms have been developed, showing a unique level of cooperation between companies from two different countries, the director general added.

Localization of production of Russian munitions in India will further develop in the future, the head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, said in the same statement.

"Rostec has considerable experience in industrial partnership with friendly states. Many projects include technology transfer and expertise sharing. Such a partnership allows an importing country to develop its own production, which is a competitive advantage of Rostec as a leading defense solutions supplier. We plan to implement several such projects with India," Chemezov said, adding that in the future, in order to facilitate local production of Mango rounds, the company plans to launch gunpowder manufacturing in India.

The 125-milimeter rounds are used in various modifications of the T-72 and T-90 tanks, which are widely used by the Indian army. Mango rounds are equipped with the ZBM-42 armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber projectile capable of penetrating modern tanks with combined protection.
