The European Union has trained almost 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers since early 2022, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Thursday (11 July), adding that the bloc should continue supporting Ukraine.
"We have to continue supporting Ukraine, we at European Union, we have done that, we have provided almost 40 billion of military support, trained almost 60,000 soldiers from Ukraine, increasing our military capacity and increasing our production capacity of our defense industry," Borrell said.
The EU foreign and security policy chief spoke in Washington ahead of the final day of the NATO summit, which has been dominated by the conflict in Ukraine.
Borrell said in May that the EU wanted to expand the Ukraine training mission and was discussing new goals.
Western countries have ramped up their military and financial aid for Kiev since the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The Kremlin has consistently warned the EU against continued arms deliveries to Kiev, saying it would lead to further escalation.
