United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed efforts to restore peace in Bangladesh with the support of the interim government and to organize parliamentary elections.
On Monday (August 12), the Secretary-General’s Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said in a statement, "The Secretary-General has welcomed efforts to restore peace with the support of the interim government and to organize parliamentary elections in Bangladesh."
Guterres has called on the interim government to move towards parliamentary elections with an inclusive and comprehensive effort, considering the voices of women, youth, and people from across the country, including minorities, as the nation moves forward in the coming weeks.
In a statement received in Dhaka on Tuesday (August 13), it was stated that the Secretary-General has expressed full solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and called for full respect for their human rights.
Guterres emphasized the need for a full, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all acts of violence.
