At least three people are dead and more than a dozen others are missing after Super Typhoon Yagi hit northern Vietnam on Saturday (7 September) afternoon, state media reported.

The storm ripped off steel roofs from houses in Quang Ninh province, killing three residents, state media said, citing local and national disaster control authorities.

Nearly 50,000 people have been evacuated from coastal towns in Vietnam with authorities issuing a stay indoors warning.

Schools have been closed in 12 northern provinces, including in the capital Hanoi.
