The Russian House in Dhaka, in collaboration with Paul’s Academy, organized a vibrant event celebrating the birthday of Father Frost, the legendary Russian winter figure. The event featured a children's drawing competition titled "Happy Birthday, Father Frost", which saw participation from more than 150 students from the Paul’s Academy chain of schools.
Alongside the competition, students enjoyed a screening of the Russian animated fantasy series "The Adventures of Peter & the Wolf", produced by the renowned Soyuzmultfilm animation studio. The celebration concluded with winners receiving souvenirs and gifts to mark the occasion.
While Father Frost is widely recognized today as a jovial figure associated with winter and gift-giving, his origins trace back to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Asia Minor, known for his charitable deeds. Over time, Father Frost evolved from his early portrayal as an old man of the North associated with icy winds and blizzards and was known by various names such as Treskunets, Studenets, Morozko, or Moroz Ivanovich.
Modern Father Frost, complete with a decorated staff, a luxurious fur coat, and a bag of gifts, emerged about 120 years ago. His first documented appearance was in 1900 during a Christmas celebration, where he delighted children with gifts. A few years later, his granddaughter, the Snow Maiden, became a key figure in the festivities, adding further charm to the holiday tradition.
