It’s exciting and fun to be in the city at midnight when the skyline turns into a canvas of light. For the start of a new year full of potential, celebrations, big and small, bring people together. This means that Dhaka is the place to be on New Year’s Eve if you want to celebrate in style, with a mix of different cultures and a bit of magic.

The new year is a time to celebrate new beginnings. It is time to celebrate having a clean slate. Anything is possible because the past doesn't matter. It has become a time to celebrate our romantic relationships by kissing at the moment that the new year begins. Many of us also celebrate by getting totally wasted. Hey, don't knock it until you try it. But please don't drink and drive. Celebrating the new year by saying that your life and the lives of others on the streets are not important is not exactly life-affirming.

Seeing in the New Year is a time-honoured tradition, so it should come as little surprise that many of the greatest poets have written about the New Year in their work. Below is my pick of one of the best New Year poems:
