The governments primary responsibility is the safety of its citizens, and these measures were crucial to maintaining law and order during a period of intense unrest.
One of the government's immediate concerns was safeguarding critical infrastructure, particularly the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, which is pivotal to the nation's economic activity. Ensuring the security of this vital corridor is crucial for the transportation of goods and services, which is fundamental to the country's economy. By securing this and other key infrastructures, the government aims to minimise long-term economic damage.
The government recognises the short-term economic losses resulting from these necessary actions. The garment sector, steel industry, pharmaceuticals, and various other sectors have experienced disruptions. However, the government is actively working to support these industries and mitigate the economic impact.
Short-term Sacrifices for Long-term Stability
The governments measures are designed to stabilise the situation, which is essential for economic recovery. The temporary disruptions are a necessary sacrifice to ensure a secure and stable environment, which is a prerequisite for sustainable economic growth. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assured that the curfew will be gradually relaxed as the situation improves. This phased approach ensures that public safety is not compromised while allowing economic activities to resume progressively.
Responsiveness to Public Grievances
The government has shown a commitment to addressing the root causes of the protests. The significant reduction in job quotas, initially a major grievance of the student protesters, demonstrates the governments willingness to listen and act upon legitimate demands. This includes financial assistance and policy adjustments to facilitate a quick rebound.
