Several heavyweight candidates including ministers, state ministers, and whips have missed out on Awami League’s party ticket to contest the ensuing 12th parliamentary polls.
Among them are Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Mustafa Jabbar, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain, State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, and State Minister for Culture KM Khalid. Besides, former minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former minister Abul Kalam Azad, and whip Samshul Haque Chowdhury have also been deprived of party nominations this time.
Apart from this, the Awami League has not nominated some people who were once known as heavyweight candidates for the party.
Among them are former Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, his son-in-law Habibe Millat, former General Secretary of Swechasebak League Pankaj Debnath, former personal assistant of the Prime Minister Saifuzzaman Shikhar, Jaya Sengupta, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Dr. Murad Hasan, Sadek Khan, and former IGP Nur Mohammad.
Former Minister of State for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain was a two-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Kurigram-4 Constituency. Biplab Hasan has been nominated for this seat. The State Minister for Labour, Monnujan Sufian, was a Member of Parliament for Khulna-3 Constituency. The Awami League’s organising secretary, SM Kamal Hossain, has been nominated from her seat. Abdul Hai Akand got the party nomination instead of State Minister for Culture KM Khalid’s Mymensingh-5 Constituency.
Meanwhile, Motaherul Islam has been nominated for the Chattogram-3 constituency instead of Whip Samshul Haque Chowdhury. Pankaj Debnath, former general secretary of the Swechasebak League, was an MP from Barisal-4 constituency. Awami League’s International Affairs Secretary, Shammi Ahmed, has been nominated in his place. Saifuzzaman Shikhar was the Member of Parliament for Magura-1 Constituency. Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has been nominated in his place.
Former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir was an influential bureaucrat. He also served as a member of the presidium of the Awami League. This time, Awami League’s information and research secretary, Selim Mahmud, has been nominated for his seat (Chandpur-1). Former minister Abul Kalam Azad’s seat (Jamalpur-1) has been nominated this time by Nur Ahmed.
Former Local Government Minister and Faridpur-3 Constituency MP Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and his son-in-law, Sirajganj-2 Constituency MP Habibe Millat, were also deprived. Faridpur district Awami League president Shamim Haque and Jannat Ara Henry have been nominated in their place.
One of the cricketers has been added to the nomination list, but another has been dropped. He is Naimur Rahman Durjoy. Abdus Salam has been nominated to replace the former Member of Parliament for Manikganj-1 constituency.
Sadek Khan, the former president of the Dhaka South Awami League, was the MP in the Dhaka-13 constituency. Party presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak got a nomination there. The much-discussed former state minister, Dr. Murad Hasan, was a Member of Parliament for Jamalpur-4. Mahbubur Rahman has been nominated here. Abdul Kahar Akand, the investigating officer of the Bangabandhu assassination case, got the ticket of the party in the seat of former IGP Nur Mohammad (Kishorganj-2).
