Awami League joint general secretary and foreign minister Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday (24 January) said extreme frustration prevails within the BNP as they now realise that boycotting elections was a big mistake.

He made the remarks while talking to reporters at Nabakumar Institution, a historical education institute in Bakshi Bazar of Old Dhaka.

Hasan paid tribute at the memorial of Shaheed Matiur Rahman, who sacrificed his life during the mass upsurge of 1969, by placing wreaths on behalf of the party leaders.

The foreign minister said the whole world is congratulating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her re-election. "This has upset them (BNP) and they are talking nonsense."

He said BNP-Jamaat denied the freedom struggle and mentioned that independence came under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"But today BNP-Jamaat tried to distort the history of our Liberation War and claimed that the War began by blowing a whistle. That's why they deny the freedom struggle," said the foreign minister.

"Our independence did not come by blowing someone's whistle," he said paying respect to by placing wreaths on behalf of the party leaders.
