The ruling Awami League government has pushed the entire economy of the country towards absolute destruction, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, alleged on Monday (Feb 5).
“We are afraid of the lack of democracy, unbridled corruption, money laundering spree, inflationary pressure, declining foreign exchange reserve, current account and fiscal deficits and unprecedented depreciation of money against foreign currency,” he said.
Citing the country`s overall economy, the BNP leader said that the present situation of the country’s every major economic indicator is deplorable, pushing the overall economy towards a catastrophic situation.
The government is pushing the entire country towards the loan trap as it has taken an anti-people stance by increasing TAX and VAT to pay off the internal debt, he said.
At present, the amount of domestic and foreign debt of the government is more than the budget for the two financial years of Bangladesh, Rizvi said.
According to the central bank, the government`s total foreign debt has reached Tk 7,97,800 crore, while the internal debt stands at Tk 8,15,911 crore, bringing the total local and foreign debts to Tk 16,13,711 crore, he said.
Prices of essentials out of the government’s control
The majority of the country`s population is enduring hunger and starvation while leaders of the ruling party are engaged in sharing power among themselves.
The common people are bearing the brunt of the inflationary pressure while the country’s industries and agriculture sectors are suffering from power crisis due to the indulgence of the ruling party leaders in corruption, he said.
